An Act of Kindness

Let me tell you a little story about a city employee.  She has a regular 9-5 job, overworked and underpaid, processing business licenses and dealing with all sorts of nice and not-so-nice people. It’s late afternoon and she looks at the clock in anticipation, quitting time soon! Just when she thought it was smooth sailing a woman walks in needing assistance. The city employee tells the woman they stop taking applications at 4:30pm and it was now 4:45pm and they close at 5pm.  The woman pouts and says “Oh no, PLEEZ, I really needed this today.”  The employee considers this for a moment, tired from a long day’s work and looking forward to getting home and relaxing usually she would stick to “rules are rules” and “I just work here” attitude; but this time something inside her agreed to help this poor frazzled woman sitting before her.  In helping this woman get her paperwork in order she feels a wave of regret as she watches her fellow employees running out the door at 5 on the dot, and she ends up finally leaving her office 15mins later than usual. On the drive home, faced with traffic, she wonders why she just didn’t turn the woman away.

What this city employee didn’t know was that there was a horrible six vehicle accident involving both northbound and southbound lanes with cars,  parts,  and broken glass all over the street, on the sidewalks and ending with one vehicle through the window of a bank!  This accident happened exactly at the moment in which the frazzled woman and her friend would have driven through.  Unbeknownst to the city employee, her single act of kindness had saved lives.

How many times have you acted out of kindness without knowing the effect it may have had? Better yet, have you ever been the recipient of an act of kindness that made a difference in your life? And if so, did you pay it forward?  If we all did one nice thing for someone everyday, what a difference we could make in the world. We never know what a profound effect we have on people when we act out of kindness.  So I say, “Never Stop!”

Was this story all a coincidence?  Is there any proof the woman would have been in the accident had she left earlier?  Well, I guess this all lies in perception and what I choose to believe is that my friend and I are alive and in good health today because one average city employee took a moment out of her life and treated me with kindness. ;)

  1. Great story. Random acts of kindness cause a wonderful ripple in the universe that is so desperately needed NOW. Even something as simple as a smile has wonderful effects in the universe. Here’s to random acts daily. :)
